History in the Making

A full history of the Burns Lake Show & Shine

Kent Lambert from the Southside area of the Lakes District organized a small Show & Shine in September, 2006, at the old Nordic Ford lot (currently owned by Lakes District Maintenance), at the west end of town.

In 2007, Randy and Kristi Rensby of Burns Lake got involved, helping Kent organize a September Show & Shine at the local A &W, right in the center of Burns Lake.  We had cars from as far as Smithers and Prince George attend. That was a fun show, but the parking lot is quite crowded.

It was decided to switch the show to July, and in 2008 we chose to try the Overwaitea parking lot, which was quite a big larger.  Again, it was a fun show (in spite of a few rain showers that had one car owner scrambling for his car cover at every rain drop!).  But we felt like we had lost the Cruisin`the Dub feel.

A nice addition in 2008 was the free barbecue for car show participants, hosted by Dave and Verna Hopper of Burns Lake.  We handed out trophies and owner`s draw prizes at the barbecue, and everyone seemed to enjoy the food, which was provided by volunteers (usually car owners`wives!) and Dave and Verna.

Plans were put in place to return to the A & W in 2009, but to utilize a different part of the parking lot.  We had cars from Smithers through Prince George again, and one from the Lower Mainland!  Good timing I guess!  From the car owners` perspective, this show went much better – but dealing with the drive-through traffic was a nightmare!

Luckily we had Dave and Verna hosting the barbecue again, which soothed the ruffled feathers and was quite an enjoyable outing. Their place is right on Burns Lake, and it makes for a great photo op with the lake as a backdrop!

After much thought, it was decided to approach the Village of Burns Lake to see if we could use the newly finished Burns Lake Spirit Square, a beautiful park setting built with Provincial Grant money offered to increase community spirit with a quality gathering place.

In 2010, we held the Show & Shine on the grass – and everyone was pretty pleased with the new venue!  Cars came, as always, from Prince George through to Smithers.  A large contingent of bikes came out as well – they were just out for a cruise when the saw the car show signs, so came in to check it out, and stayed a while!  Pretty setting for photos, a bricked walkway for those with strollers, lots of space, and best of all – a separate parking area for the spectators.

Of course, the car owners came out again for the barbecue afterwards – it`s definitely becoming a great tradition!

In 2011, we returned to the Spirit Square, and were thrilled to have cars from Vanderhoof, Moricetown, and Terrace for the first time!  We also had a truck from Powell River – again, good timing, but it was pretty neat to have people from so far away.

The barbecue seems to be a hit - everyone loves it!

Plans are well underway for the 2013 Show & Shine – please check out the Home page for more information!
